Krefeld, also called Crefeld, is a city and port, in North Rhine–Westphalia Land (state), western Germany. Krefeld’s medieval city centre lies 10 km west of the Rhine River. The city stretches east-west, with Uerdingen, a second city centre, lying along the Rhine and containing a harbour. Also known as the "Velvet and Silk City", Krefeld's residents use a dialect is a Low German variety, "Krefelder Plattdeutsch," "Krieewelsch Platt," or sometimes simply "Platt."

How to Get There:
Krefeld is connected to the Deutsche Bahn network, however the trains are used only by locals. Krefeld itself uses four tramway and several bus routes, and the tramways are being upgraded as they are anachronistic. It has a population of 240,000 citizens on an area of 138 sq km. Major Airports near Krefeld are Dusseldorf International Airport, 14 km; Bonn/ Cologne Airport, 65 km and Brussels National Airport, 150 km. Other smaller airports near Krefeld are Aachen/Maastricht Airport, 70 km; Antwerp Deurne Airport, 150 km and Frankfurt Hahn Airport at 161 km.

Botanischer Garten Krefeld, Lange and Esters Houses showcasing Museums, Kaiserswerth, Lantz´scher Park, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen: Kunstsammlung im Ständehaus opposite the Kunsthalle, Löbbecke-Museum und Aquazoo, EKO Haus der japanischen Kultur, Oberkasseler Bridge, Nordpark and the Rheinpark.

Where to Eat:
Krefeld has 307 restaurants of all varieties and catering to all tastes. The more prominent ones are La Romantica, Namaste, Óleo, Korff , Benders Barbecue, Cottages Fischerheim, Cafe Schmitz, Restaurant Sonnenhof and the Hückel-May.

Altweibernacht. A part of Germany's carnival tradition. On the Thursday night before Ash Wednesday, women dress up as an old crone, wearing witches masks and clubs. If a man goes to work on this Thursday, he will wear an old tie, or no tie at all, because the women are allowed to cut it off.

There are a number of hotels in neighbouring cities like Cologne, Dortmund, Essen and Kreis Recklinghausen. Krefeld itself has close to 20 hotels and six B&Bs/inns.
